el papa nicolás iv encargó la decoración en mosaico del ábside de santa maria maggiore , reemplazo de la fifth-century mosaico pero sin cambiar por completo el tema original y conservando el busto del salvador , se cree que apareció milagrosamente en el momento de la basilica's consagración . la tarea fue encomendada a jacopo torriti , quien dejó el taller de letrán 1291 para ayudar al trabajo en santa maria maggiore .
